Suez Canal remains safe, traffic operating normally: Authority

Cairo, Sep 21 (UNI) As navigation remains disrupted in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandeb, Egypt on Monday said the Suez Canal remains “safe” and that maritime traffic is operating normally along the strategic waterway, one of the world’s most important shipping routes.
According to a statement issued by the Suez Canal Authority, its Chairman Osama Rabie made the remarks at a ceremony in Alexandria marking World Maritime Day 2026, organised by the Maritime Transport Sector of the Ministry of Transport.
Rabie said vessel traffic through the canal was proceeding regularly, with revenue reaching $567.1 million in August, an increase of 56.7 per cent from $326 million recorded in the same month last year.
He stressed that navigation traffic remained stable and that services were being provided with high efficiency. He added that canal pilots -- specialised local navigators who board ships to guide them safely through the narrow waterway -- were performing their duties with the highest levels of readiness and professionalism.
According to navigation reports, 1,358 vessels carrying 68.3 million metric tonnes of net cargo transited the canal in August, compared with 1,070 vessels carrying 45.2 million metric tonnes during the same month in 2025.
Rabie said the figures represented increases of 27 per cent in the number of vessels, 51.1 per cent in net cargo and 56.7 per cent in canal revenue.
Referring to global and regional geopolitical developments in recent years, Rabie said international crises had directly affected global supply chains. However, he stressed that the Suez Canal had once again demonstrated its critical and irreplaceable role in securing those supply chains.
The Egyptian announcement comes amid continued tensions around the Bab al-Mandab Strait, which connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and serves as a key gateway to the Suez Canal.
Following Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip that began in October 2023, Yemen's Houthi group targeted commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait, prompting major shipping companies to divert their vessels around the Cape of Good Hope.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has already expressed concerns over the Red Sea disruptions that has cost Egypt around $11 billion in lost Suez Canal revenues.
The current attacks on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz are also having an impact on maritime security in the Gulf of Aden. The Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden form one of the world’s most important maritime corridors, connecting regional economies to international markets. Any disruption along these waterways can have far-reaching consequences, affecting shipping routes, supply chains and the movement of goods well beyond the region.UNI AAB
