Three tankers explode after hitting sea mines near Strait of Hormuz

Tehran, Oct 29 (UNI) Three tankers exploded and caught fire after striking sea mines while attempting to cross an unauthorized route south of the Strait of Hormuz over the past 24 hours, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said in a statement carried by state media on Thursday.
The Guards said the vessels switched off their radar and navigation systems and ignored warnings from its navy. The ships were abandoned along the southern shores of the strait, the statement said.
Britain’s maritime agency UKMTO earlier reported receiving information from the master of another vessel about a ship on fire in the Strait of Hormuz. The agency did not provide details on the cause of the fire or report any casualties.
The burning vessel was spotted about nine nautical miles (17 km) north of Khasab, an Omani town located near the strait, UKMTO said.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical shipping corridor for global oil and natural gas supplies. Since the Middle East war began in February, Iran has sought to exert control over the waterway and has attacked vessels it accuses of transiting the strait without authorization.
