Myanmar airstrikes kill at least 15 civilians, including infant, injure 32

Naypyidaw, Nov 2 (UNI) At least 15 civilians, including an infant, were killed and 32 others injured when Myanmar military aircraft carried out airstrikes across four townships in Rakhine and Karenni states on Sunday, local media reported.
The attacks struck residential areas and a maternity facility in Kyauktaw, Mrauk-U, Pauktaw and Kyaukphyu townships, killing 12 people in Rakhine State, independent Myanmar-focused news outlet The Irrawaddy reported on Monday.
The latest attacks followed an airstrike on Saturday in eastern Loikaw township in Karenni State, where three children were killed and eight others injured when military aircraft bombed a school.
The children had gathered at the school to attend a nutrition programme during a holiday, according to the report.
The attacks add to mounting civilian casualties amid Myanmar's ongoing armed conflict, which escalated after the military, led by Min Aung Hlaing, seized power in February 2021, overthrowing the elected government.
Since the coup, several ethnic armed organisations and other resistance groups have been fighting the military-led authorities across different parts of the country.
Rakhine State is home to a large Rohingya population, a predominantly Muslim minority that has faced decades of persecution and violence by Myanmar's military, as well as threats from other armed groups.
Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya have been forced to flee Myanmar, a Buddhist-majority Southeast Asian country, over the years, with many seeking refuge in neighbouring Bangladesh.
The latest airstrikes underscore the continuing risks faced by civilians as fighting spreads across Myanmar's conflict-affected regions.UNI AAB
