US, Japan, South Korea agree on Arctic-Pacific cooperation, reaffirm commitment to North Korea denuclearization

Atlanta, Oct 31 (UNI) The United States, Japan and South Korea agreed to explore maritime and economic cooperation in the Pacific Arctic, while reaffirming their commitment to the denuclearization of North Korea.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Atlanta, where the three officials signed a memorandum of cooperation establishing a Trilateral Arctic Pacific Partnership (TAPP).
The ministers reaffirmed their commitment to the complete denuclearization of North Korea and called for full implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, including measures aimed at preventing revenue generation for Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.
They also praised the Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Team for documenting North Korea's violations and evasion of UN sanctions, according to the State Department readout.
The officials stressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. Rubio also raised concerns over China's activities in the South China Sea and what Washington described as coercive behaviour in the East China Sea and Yellow Sea, as well as growing cooperation between China and Russia.
On economic security, the three ministers opposed economic coercion and the weaponisation of supply chains. They also reviewed progress on a trilateral agreement on small modular reactor deployments, signed in Ankara on July 7, aimed at leveraging the three countries' industrial capabilities to advance global energy security.
The discussions also covered areas of economic security cooperation identified during a trilateral consultation held in Seoul on Oct. 15.
The three countries reaffirmed commitments outlined in their Sept. 21 trilateral joint statement and agreed to continue meetings at all levels.UNI AAB
