Ukraine resumes drone strikes on Russian refineries after brief halt, says Russian Deputy PM Alexander Novak

Moscow, Oct 30 (UNI) Ukraine has resumed drone attacks on Russian energy infrastructure following an unofficial pause, with three oil refineries and a gas chemical complex targeted on Friday, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said, reports TASS.
"Another attack on Russian oil refineries took place today. Four processing facilities were targeted – three oil refineries and a gas chemical complex. One of the facilities sustained minor damage, but overall, our air defences and protection systems worked," Novak told reporters.
"There was a pause, but attacks resumed today, and our facilities are working to ensure protection," he added.
The reported strikes come after The Wall Street Journal reported on October 29 that Ukrainian military units conducting long-range operations had informally suspended attacks on Russian refineries following pressure from the Trump administration. Citing officials familiar with the operations, the newspaper said the pause was expected to remain in place until after the US midterm elections.
US President Donald Trump had earlier accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of not seeking a peaceful settlement, saying strikes on Russian oil refineries were having a negative impact worldwide. Trump also described Zelensky as the wrong person for Washington to deal with.
During a telephone conversation on October 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump discussed, among other issues, petroleum supplies. Putin said Moscow had reiterated its readiness to supply oil and petroleum products to the US and international markets, while Trump praised a diesel agreement with Russia.
Ukrainian media reported that the Novokuybyshevsk refinery, owned by state-controlled oil company Rosneft, was among facilities previously targeted in the country's drone campaign. The refinery processes about 8.8 million tonnes of crude oil annually, producing aviation fuel, petrol, diesel, lubricants and other petroleum products. It was also hit in a Ukrainian drone attack in August 2026.
Kyiv has targeted Russian refineries, fuel depots and other energy infrastructure in an effort to disrupt supplies to the military and reduce revenues used to finance Moscow's war.
The latest reports of strikes come as Zelensky has urged the European union to provide greater support for Ukraine's air defences ahead of winter. His appeal followed Russian attacks across the country that killed 19 people and injured 71 others, including 11 children.
