Trump to meet Gulf leaders in New York over post Iran war strategy

Washington, Sep 17 (UNI) US President Donald Trump is expected to meet leaders and foreign ministers of the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries in New York on September 22 on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly to discuss the next phase of the war with Iran, according to an Axios report citing three sources familiar with the plans.
The meeting is expected to focus on US proposals for a postwar strategy as Trump and his senior aides work on a plan for the period following the conflict. According to the sources, the broader strategy is expected to be finalised after the US midterm elections.
The meeting is expected to include representatives from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman. The US State Department has sent initial invitations to the Gulf countries on September 16, the sources said.
The meeting could also be expanded to include other Arab and Muslim leaders, Axios reported.
The proposed talks come as Washington is struggling to work on its strategy for the aftermath of the conflict and to shape the strategy for the region.
Trump has again said that the conflict could be nearing an end, while US officials have continued discussions on Iran and the security of the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, preparations for a September 24 meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington remain incomplete, with logistical and policy details still being worked out.
There is uncertainty over the number of Chinese delegates who will attend the state dinner has complicated Beijing's planning for its delegation.
The uncertainty has also affected decisions over which Chinese technology executives may accompany Xi to Washington, particularly as the two countries prepare to discuss trade, technology and other economic issues.
Trump has confirmed that Xi will visit Washington on September 24 and that a state dinner will be held in his honour.
