Russian missiles and drones hit Kyiv, other Ukrainian regions, wounding dozens

Kyiv, Sep 17 (UNI) Russia launched a barrage of missiles and drones against Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine overnight and into Thursday morning, wounding at least 18 people in the capital, including two children, Ukrainian officials said.
The Kyiv City Military Administration said attacks were recorded at more than 10 locations in the capital. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said 18 people, including two children, were wounded, with most casualties reported from a damaged 16-storey apartment building, as per local media reports.
Damage was reported in four districts of Kyiv, including warehouses and a petrol station. The attack also temporarily disrupted water supplies on the left bank of the Dnipro River, officials said.
Ukraine's Air Force said it has been successful in destroying or suppressing 131 Russian aerial targets during the overnight attack. It said the main areas targeted were the Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Odesa regions, with strikes recorded at 36 locations and debris from intercepted targets falling at five locations.
The barrage involved Oniks anti-ship cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, four cruise missiles, and nearly 160 drones, according to the Air Force. It did not specify how many ballistic missiles were intercepted.
In Odesa, six people, including two children, were wounded after a Russian attack damaged a 19-storey apartment building, residential structures and other sites, local authorities said.
Three people were wounded in Zaporizhzhia, where a missile strike hit industrial facilities and sparked a fire at one of them, authorities said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy condemned the attacks and said Ukraine was responding to Russian strikes across the country.
“I thank our warriors, who make Russia feel the war every day,” Zelenskiy said in a post on X.
He said Ukrainian forces had struck the Yaroslavl oil refinery in Russia during a joint operation involving the Security Service of Ukraine, Unmanned Systems Forces, Defence Intelligence of Ukraine and the Foreign Intelligence Service.
Zelensky also said Ukrainian forces had carried out a strike on a military airfield in Russia's Rostov region, with damage confirmed to an An-12 aircraft, two An-26 aircraft, and three helicopters. He also reported what he described as successful operations in the Black Sea.
Russian regional authorities said Ukrainian drone attacks had also targeted several Russian regions. In the Samara region, more than 40 drones targeted the area, according to Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, who said an industrial facility and several residential buildings were damaged, but there were no casualties.
The latest Russian strikes came hours after the US House of Representatives approved legislation aimed at tightening sanctions and tariffs on Russia over its war in Ukraine. The bill has been sent to US President Donald Trump for his consideration.
Zelenskiy welcomed the US legislation, describing it as an “extremely powerful tool” that could help pressure Moscow to end the conflict.
“It is symbolic that the US House of Representatives passed the Lindsey Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act on the night of yet another Russian attack on Ukraine with ballistic and other missiles and drones,” Zelenskiy said.
He said stronger sanctions were needed to support diplomatic efforts and push Russia back towards negotiations. “Sanctions must be strong so that all efforts for peace – including our joint diplomatic efforts with the United States, Europe, and our other friends – can succeed,” he said.
Russia has intensified its air campaign against Ukraine in recent months, while Kyiv has faced shortages of air-defence interceptors needed to counter ballistic missiles. Russia's Defence Ministry said its forces had also struck vessels used by the Ukrainian military, without providing further details.
