May meet North Korea’s Kim during upcoming Asia trip: Trump

Washington, Oct 13 (UNI) US President Donald Trump said he may meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during an upcoming trip to Asia, raising the prospect of renewed diplomacy between Washington and Pyongyang.
When asked at the White House whether he planned to meet Kim during the trip, Trump said, “I may.”
“That’ll be exciting, won’t it? But I get along with him,” he added.
Trump plans to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen, China, scheduled for November 18-19.
On Saturday, Trump told a campaign rally in Ohio that he “gets along great” with Kim, stressing the importance of maintaining good relations with leaders of nuclear-armed countries.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said earlier that Trump did not regard talks with North Korea as a “concession” and is willing to engage Pyongyang if doing so serves US national interests.
Trump’s remarks came a day after North Korea launched multiple ballistic missiles towards waters off its east coast, according to South Korea’s military.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said one missile launched from the Pyongyang area travelled more than 900 km (559 miles) on Monday. The military did not specify the total number of missiles detected.
Japan’s Deputy Defence Minister Takashi Koyari said at least two missiles had been launched 17 minutes apart and landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.
The first missile travelled about 220 km (137 miles), while the second flew more than 910 km (565 miles), following what Koyari described as an irregular flight path that suggested it might have been a hypersonic weapon.
South Korea’s presidential office condemned the launches as violations of United Nations Security Council resolutions and called on Pyongyang to stop them immediately.
Earlier in August, Trump said he hoped to meet Kim later this year, fuelling speculation that he could revive the personal diplomacy that led to three face-to-face meetings during his first term.
The two leaders met in Singapore in June 2018, in Hanoi in February 2019, and at the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjom in June 2019. Their second summit collapsed without an agreement, and diplomatic efforts subsequently stalled.
The launches came amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula, where both North and South Korea have been expanding their weapons programmes.
JCS spokesperson Jang Do-young said the latest launches appeared to be a show of force, coming days after South Korea conducted its own hypersonic missile test.
On Thursday, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung oversaw the country’s first test firing of a hypersonic missile, an unusual public display of a weapons test by a sitting South Korean president.
Lee’s office said the weapon, once fully developed, would strengthen the country’s ability to strike key targets by surprise in a potential conflict on the Korean Peninsula.
North Korea also tested a hypersonic intermediate-range missile on October 3, designed to evade missile defences in South Korea and Japan, according to reports.
Tensions have also risen over a landmine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone separating the two Koreas. Seoul last week demanded an apology after the blast injured three South Korean soldiers.
Kim has continued to expand North Korea’s nuclear weapons programme while rejecting U.S. and South Korean overtures to resume stalled negotiations.
North Korea has repeatedly demanded that Washington abandon what it calls a hostile policy towards Pyongyang and drop its denuclearisation demands as a precondition for talks.
