Ro Khanna calls for halt to US funding for Iran war, argues hike in fuel prices and public opposition

Washington, Nov 2 (UNI) US Democratic Representative Ro Khanna has called on Congress to halt funding for further US military operations against Iran, citing growing public dissatisfaction with the eight-month-old conflict and its economic impact, particularly rising fuel prices.
“The House and the Senate should stop the funding for any further actions in the Iran war. That's what we did to stop the Vietnam War, and we need to stop this war in Iran,” Khanna, a California Democrat, said during an appearance on Fox News' 'Sunday'.
Khanna argued that voters supporting the continuation of the conflict should also be prepared for higher fuel costs.
“If people want to have the Iran war continue and want to have higher gas prices, higher diesel prices, they should vote Republican,” he said.
Khanna has joined hands with Republican Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky in efforts to invoke the War Powers Resolution to restrict President Donald Trump's authority to continue military operations against Iran without congressional approval.
The lawmakers have backed multiple resolutions seeking to force votes in the House and Senate on the administration's military campaign. However, their efforts have so far failed to secure passage.
In a social media post, Khanna urged voters to make the Iran war a key issue in the November midterm elections, contrasting candidates who support continuing the conflict with those advocating an end to it.
"We can refuse to appropriate money for it. Trump's veto has zero impact. When we take back Congress, this must be the first action. Voters want gas, food & diesel prices down," Khanna said.
He also said Democrats can vote to eliminate appropriations for the war, while linking his demand to the economic burden of the conflict.
“Trump called me a lightweight four times yesterday. My response: Bring down gas and diesel prices,” Khanna wrote, referring to the US president's remarks.
Public opposition to the conflict has also featured in recent polling. A recent AP-NORC poll found that about 70 per cent of respondents also said lawmakers should prioritize ending the Iran conflict. It has passed its eight-month mark, resulting in the deaths of 21 U.S. service members and costing USD 47 billion as of October. The estimated price tag does not include the cost to damaged U.S. military bases in the Middle East, The Hill reported.
Meanwhile, further military action against Iran could follow the November midterm elections. US President Donald Trump on Sunday said Washington could strike Iran's remaining suspected nuclear facilities within "10 minutes", keeping the possibility of further military action open even as diplomatic efforts to end the conflict continued.
Speaking to reporters at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Trump claimed that US military operations have significantly weakened Iran's armed forces and nuclear infrastructure, leaving only one or two sites to be targeted.
"We still have to take care of, I would say, one or two sites, but we can do that in 10 minutes. So, we have that plan," Trump said.
Referring to the suspected Iranian nuclear facility at Pickaxe Mountain, he added: "You probably could look at Pickaxe Mountain, you have to take care of that. We can do that all very quickly."
Trump made the remarks when asked about the timeline for ongoing Qatari-mediated negotiations between Washington and Tehran. With Washington keeping the military option open and Tehran maintaining its readiness to retaliate, the outcome of the Qatar-mediated negotiations remains uncertain.
