Albania opposition stages nationwide protest as student demonstrations enter 12th day

Tirana, Oct. 24 (UNI) Albania's opposition Democratic Party and its supporters rallied outside Prime Minister Edi Rama's office in Tirana on Saturday, burning cushions placed by the government as a symbol of dialogue, as student protests entered their 12th day.
Opposition lawmakers, including Flamur Noka and Klevis Balliu, joined supporters marching from the party's headquarters along Deshmoret e Kombit Boulevard towards the government building, Albania state media reported
Demonstrators set fire to the cushions that Rama had placed on a table as an invitation to dialogue with students, rejecting what they viewed as the government's proposed approach to addressing their grievances.
The opposition rally lasted about 90 minutes before demonstrators moved towards the Ministry of Education, where students had called a separate protest for 2 p.m. local time. University lecturers were also expected to join, local media reported.
Protesters marched towards the Ministry of Education, as tensions mounted in the capital amid separate protests by students.
Police reinforced security around the ministry, deploying a water cannon and units of the Rapid Intervention Forces following social media calls for students to attend the demonstration.
Rama acknowledged growing public discontent, saying the government would respond to concerns raised by protesters.
"Within a matter of hours or days, we will present our overall reflection on what a significant portion of society is trying to convey," he said, adding that public support for the demonstrations showed a desire for the government to be more responsive.
He also warned against violence, pledging a sustained response from the state to those who encouraged or carried out unrest.
Security forces remained on alert as opposition supporters and students gathered at separate locations in the capital, raising concerns about possible confrontations.
The demonstrations come amid mounting political tensions in Albania, with opposition groups demanding government accountability and students pressing authorities to address their grievances. UNI AAB
