Ukraine suspects US deliberately withheld intelligence of Russian missile strikes

Kyiv, Oct 14 (UNI) Ukrainian officials suspect that the US may have deliberately withheld advance warnings of multiple Russian missile strikes this week, after Washington reportedly blamed “bad weather” for a failure in its missile-detection system, according to sources cited by CBS News.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv had “received no advance warning from our partners” before Russia launched a ballistic missile barrage against Kyiv and other locations early on Tuesday.
US officials reportedly told their Ukrainian counterparts that bad weather had disrupted the system used to detect Russian missile launches. Ukrainian officials, speaking anonymously to CBS News, rejected that explanation and accused Washington of “playing” with the system.
The sources said the US early-warning system appeared to be functioning again when Russia launched another wave of ballistic missiles at around 3am local time on Wednesday.
The US had also failed to provide intelligence on Russian ballistic missile launches during an earlier incident this year, reportedly citing the need to redirect resources towards the Middle East, the sources said.
Zelensky said Russia launched more than 39 ballistic missiles and over 120 attack drones and loitering munitions during the overnight assault, primarily targeting energy and critical infrastructure in Kyiv and Kharkiv. The attacks killed six people and left around 600,000 without electricity.
US President Donald Trump denied on Tuesday that Washington had stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine, saying the US remained committed to helping both sides reach an agreement.
“No, we haven’t. We help them, but we’re really helping them get to a final answer. We want the war ended,” Trump told reporters.
“We are helping them, and we are sharing intel. We want the war to end, so we’re working with them and with Russia on getting the war to end,” he added.
The latest concerns follow reports that the Trump administration had threatened to suspend intelligence sharing and halt European allies’ purchases of US-made weapons for Ukraine through the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) programme unless Kyiv stopped deep strikes against Russian energy infrastructure. A European official and a Ukrainian official told CBS News about the reported warning.
Ukraine relies heavily on US intelligence for both offensive and defensive military operations, including satellite data and aircraft sensors used to detect Russian aircraft and missile launches. Sources told CBS News that intelligence sharing had not been suspended entirely and described the absence of advance warnings this week as a specific incident.
Ukrainian forces have also reported disruptions to SpaceX’s Starlink satellite communications system, which plays a crucial role in military coordination and drone operations.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence sources told CBS News that SpaceX had restricted the operation of Starshield military terminals while in motion during the night of 14 October, without warning Ukrainian forces.
The restrictions have complicated drone missions, particularly those involving interceptors and medium-range strike drones, while affecting frontline logistics, reconnaissance and communications relay operations, the sources said.
The ministry is working with the US, SpaceX and NATO partners to assess the disruption and test alternative communications systems, they added.
The restrictions were first reported by the Kyiv Independent and the Financial Times. CBS News said it had contacted SpaceX, the White House and the Pentagon for comment.
Zelensky raised the issue of Russia’s latest attacks during a visit to the UK on Wednesday, where he was due to meet Prime Minister Andy Burnham and other officials.
“The strike was absolutely deliberate and indicative in its scale — such a demonstrative disrespect from Russia toward America has never happened before. Russia does not consider the statements of the President of America to be strong,” Zelensky wrote on X.
“We ask America and EVERYONE in the world who does not close their eyes to reality to respond, and to respond harshly,” he added.
