UN chief says UN is needed more than ever as organisation marks 81st anniversary

New York, Oct 24 (UNI) United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Saturday said the UN was needed more than ever, reaffirming its role in promoting peace, development and human rights as the organisation marked its 81st anniversary.
In a message marking United Nations Day, Guterres highlighted the organisation's work in resolving disputes through diplomacy and international law, combating poverty and hunger, promoting human rights and delivering life-saving assistance to people affected by conflict, disasters and displacement.
"For 81 years, the @UN has been: Settling disputes with diplomacy & laws. Working to eradicate poverty & hunger. Promoting human rights. And delivering life-saving aid to people facing war, disaster & displacement," Guterres wrote in a post on X.
"Today, the United Nations is needed more than ever. We will continue working to strengthen the UN to best serve people & meet the challenges of our time," he added.
In a video message marking the occasion, Guterres said the day celebrated not just an international organisation but the principle that humanity's future depended on countries working together to advance peace, development and human rights.
He highlighted the UN's role in areas ranging from trade and technology to public health, environmental protection, gender equality and expanding opportunities for women and girls.
The organisation also provided a platform for countries to have an equal voice on the global stage, he said, stressing that multilateral cooperation remained essential in addressing shared challenges.
United Nations Day is observed annually on October 24 to commemorate the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945, which formally established the organisation following its ratification by the required majority of signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council.UNI AAB
