More than 217,000 people displaced in Yemen by war in less than three months, says IOM

Aden, Oct 14 (UNI) More than 217,000 people have been displaced across Yemen in less than two and a half months amid intensified fighting along the country's western coast, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has said, warning that continued hostilities could deepen the humanitarian crisis.
The UN migration agency recorded the displacement of 36,216 families, comprising 217,303 people, between August 1 and October 12, 2026.
Taiz governorate accounted for 55% of all recorded displacement during the period, making it the worst-affected area. The IOM said ongoing fighting had restricted access to most displacement sites there, hampering humanitarian agencies' efforts to deliver assistance.
Within Taiz, Jabal Habashi district recorded the highest number of displaced people at 32,346, followed by Al-Ma'afer with 31,230 and Al-Shamayatayn with 24,942.
Lahj governorate hosted 45,390 displaced people, the second-highest number after Taiz, while Aden, Yemen's interim capital, received 26,112, according to the report.
The IOM warned that displacement was likely to continue as fighting intensified, placing further pressure on affected families and host communities. It cautioned that worsening hostilities could further deteriorate living conditions and stretch already limited resources in areas receiving displaced people.
It further said that there was a massive need for shelter, food assistance, healthcare and other essential services, calling for sustained humanitarian support to address the needs of communities affected by the conflict.
