Nine-month pregnant woman undergoes successful brain stroke treatment at KIMS Vizag

Visakhapatnam, Sep 17 (UNI) Doctors at KIMS Seethammadhara on Thursday said they have successfully treated a nine-month pregnant woman who suffered an acute ischemic stroke, using emergency mechanical thrombectomy to restore blood flow to the brain, followed by the delivery of a healthy baby boy.
The woman from the Visakhapatnam region was brought to the hospital with sudden weakness on the right side of her body and loss of speech, the hospital said in a release.
Investigations showed severe blockages in major blood vessels on the left side of the brain, requiring immediate intervention.
The medical team, led by Chief Consultant, Neuro and Vascular Intervention Dr Venkatesh Pothula, performed an emergency mechanical thrombectomy to remove the blood clot. Special precautions were taken to minimise radiation exposure to the foetus during the procedure.
The clot was successfully removed and complete restoration of blood flow, classified as TICI-3 reperfusion, was achieved, the hospital said.
The obstetrics team led by Consultant Gynaecologist Dr Pavani Manikya Palepu closely monitored the mother and foetus during the procedure and recovery.
After the patient's neurological condition stabilised, the team planned the delivery and subsequently performed a Caesarean section, following which she delivered a healthy baby boy.
Consultant Neurologist Dr Raja Kumar P said rapid identification of the major vessel blockage and immediate thrombectomy were critical in managing the case. Medication, blood pressure, circulation and neurological status need to be carefully monitored while ensuring the safety of both mother and baby, he explained further.
Dr Pavani said close coordination among the neurology, neuro-intervention, anaesthesia and obstetrics teams enabled the emergency to be managed and the delivery to be carried out successfully.
The doctors said stroke symptoms during pregnancy require immediate medical attention and should not be delayed because of pregnancy.
They said pregnancy by itself should not be considered an absolute barrier to emergency mechanical thrombectomy in appropriate cases, where timely multidisciplinary intervention and foetal monitoring can be undertaken.
