Northeast can shine in sports, entertainment: Mizoram minister calls on investors

Aizawl, May 24 (UNI) Mizoram Sports and Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar on Saturday made a passionate pitch to investors at the Rising Northeast Investors Summit 2025 in New Delhi, urging them to tap into the Northeast’s untapped sports and entertainment potential.
Addressing the session “Unleashing the Potential of Entertainment and Sports in Northeast” at Bharat Mandapam, Hmar said that while the region, especially Mizoram, may be small in terms of population and land, it consistently punches above its weight.
“Though the Northeast accounts for just about 3% of India’s population, it contributed 7% of the Indian contingent at the 2016 Rio Olympics. In the first seasons of the Indian Super League, roughly 10% of the players were from Mizoram. This speaks volumes about our sports talent,” he remarked.
Hmar revealed that Mizoram has set its sights on the 2036 Olympics, aligning with India’s national ambition.
“Next month, Aizawl will host the first-ever national Sports Conclave to chart the road to 2036. We are focused not only on building infrastructure but also on nurturing talent that can elevate India’s global standing,” he told the audience, inviting investment and collaboration.
Also serving as Minister for Labour, Employment, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Hmar highlighted the cultural vibrancy of the region, pointing to celebrated events like Nagaland’s Hornbill Festival and Arunachal Pradesh’s Ziro Festival.
He underscored the Northeast’s potential as a music and film hub, saying, “One blockbuster film can transform state tourism. We welcome Bollywood to come discover Mizoram’s scenic beauty and cultural richness.”
Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, speaking at the same summit, echoed the call to action, noting that sports and entertainment together can become a powerful engine for the Northeast’s development.
“The Centre is pushing initiatives like the Khelo India Northeast Games, and we are eager to deepen partnerships with the corporate sector to drive growth,” he said.
The event also brought together key stakeholders, including Indian football icon Bhaichung Bhutia, Sports Authority of India officials, and entertainment industry leaders, all sharing strategies to propel the Northeast forward.
On the sidelines of the summit, Hmar visited the Mizoram pavilion and met with representatives from four homegrown startups — Lailen Consulting Pvt. Ltd., Indubitably Cultured, Fungki, and Suzanne Delish Delight Pvt. Ltd. — underscoring Mizoram’s rising entrepreneurial spirit.
