Nuclear inspectors must return to Iran, says IAEA; Iran passes bill suspending cooperation with IAEA

Tehran/Vienna, June 25 (UNI) International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said today that nuclear inspectors must return to Iran’s nuclear facilities as soon as possible, even as Iran’s parliament has passed a bill suspending cooperation with the nuclear watchdog.
Speaking to reporters at an Austrian cabinet meeting, Grossi said the focus should not be on how many months Iran’s nuclear programme was set back, but on finding a lasting diplomatic solution.
“I don’t like this hourglass approach — it’s in the eye of the beholder,” he said. “In any case, the technological knowledge is there, the industrial capacity is there — that no one can deny,” Grossi added.
He said there is a real opportunity to resolve the nuclear issue through diplomacy and warned against missing it.
“There’s a chance for a diplomatic solution, an opening — we shouldn’t miss that opportunity,” Grossi said, dismissing debates over whether Iran’s programme was delayed by two or three months as irrelevant. “We need a solution that will stand the test of time,” he stressed.
His comments came as Iran’s parliament passed a bill suspending cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, including inspections, parliamentary spokesman Alireza Salimi said today.
Under the legislation, IAEA inspectors will be barred from entering the country unless national nuclear security is guaranteed, and any future access will require approval from Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Salimi said.
He added that the bill, approved in both its general and specific terms, imposes penalties on any individuals who allow IAEA agency personnel into the country without proper authorisation.
The new measure applies to both safeguards-related and broader cooperation with the agency, he said.
Iran's Supreme National Security Council needs to give final approval to the move.
In a related development, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh has said that the US must compensate Iran for damage caused by the recent military strikes on its facilities.
In remarks to Al Mayadeen, Khatibzadeh said Tehran will file a formal complaint with the United Nations, and warned that Washington must be held responsible for what he called "unlawful aggression against Iran’s nuclear and scientific infrastructure".
He also claimed that it was the US that first sent messages seeking to halt the conflict, not Iran.
“The US must pay for the damage inflicted on Iranian facilities,” he said, adding that Iran will pursue the matter through diplomatic and legal channels.
