Bhubaneswar, June 17 (UNI) Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Bahadur Khurania on Tuesday ordered a Crime Branch inquiry into the Gopalpur gang rape case, which has been classified as a Red Flag case.
According to Odisha Police sources, the case, registered under Sections 71, 296, 351(3), and 310(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), was initially being investigated by the Gopalpur Police but has now been handed over to the Crime Against Women and Children Wing of the CID-Crime Branch, Odisha Police.
A team from the CAW&CW Wing has already reached Gopalpur.
This case has been designated a Red Flag case, and the investigation will be conducted under the direct supervision of IG, Crime Against Women and Children Wing, Shyni S.
In a shocking incident on Sunday evening, a college girl was allegedly gang-raped at Gopalpur beach in Odisha’s Ganjam district. The incident occurred when the victim had gone to the beach with her boyfriend to celebrate the Raja festival.
Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M informed the media on Tuesday that the Gopalpur Police have arrested all ten accused in connection with the case, four of whom are minors.
The SP said that out of the ten accused, three were directly involved in the gang rape.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik have strongly condemned the incident.
The Chief Minister has assured that exemplary action will be taken against all the accused. He affirmed that the strictest punishment permissible under the law will be imposed.
