Odisha Governor sets November deadline for filling vacant teaching posts in universities

Bhubaneswar, Oct 3 (UNI) Odisha Governor and Chancellor of Universities Hari Babu Kambhampati on Saturday directed vice-chancellors of state public universities to initiate recruitment for vacant teaching posts by the first week of November and complete the process by the end of the month.
Addressing a meeting on the ongoing recruitment of teaching faculty in state public universities at New Abhishek Hall on the Lok Bhavan premises here, Kambhampati said filling vacant teaching positions was the next major challenge after the appointment of vice-chancellors.
He said the recruitment process should be completed within a clearly defined timeline and merit must remain the overriding criterion in selecting faculty members.
"Merit should be the priority in the appointment of teaching faculty. Quality and merit cannot be compromised," the Governor said, stressing the need to recruit the best available faculty.
Recalling that vice-chancellors of 14 universities were appointed on a single day after he assumed office as Governor, Kambhampati said similar urgency was required to fill the vacant teaching positions in the universities.
The Governor suggested that all eligible applicants should be called for interviews instead of resorting to extensive shortlisting and scrutiny at the initial stage.
Such a system, he said, would ensure that no eligible candidate felt excluded from the recruitment process while providing interview panels with a wider pool of candidates to select from.
Kambhampati also called upon universities to pursue green certification, citing the platinum certification received by Odisha Lok Bhavan from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).
He said most universities already had substantial green cover and could obtain green certification with some additional efforts.
The Governor also sought details from universities pursuing accreditation and suggested that a common tenure should be prescribed for vice-chancellors of all state public universities.
"There are some universities where the vice-chancellor has a three-year tenure and some have four years. There should be a common tenure," he said.
He further urged universities to adopt solar power on their campuses either through their own initiatives or under the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model.
Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj endorsed the Governor's suggestions and asked the vice-chancellors to set clear timelines for completing the faculty recruitment process.
