Odisha: Historic Sikhar Chandi Temple to undergo comprehensive development: Dy CM Parida

Bhubaneswar, Sep 30 (UNI) The historic Sikhar Chandi Temple atop a hill in Bhubaneswar’s Patia area will undergo comprehensive development and beautification, with the Odisha Government planning improved facilities for devotees and tourists.
Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida on Wednesday reviewed the ongoing development and beautification works at the temple and directed officials to expedite the project ahead of the upcoming Navratri and winter tourism season.
During the review, officials discussed a comprehensive development plan covering beautification of the temple premises, widening and improvement of approach roads, drinking water facilities, parking arrangements, rest areas and other essential amenities for devotees and visitors.
The Deputy Chief Minister was informed that the first phase of the project is targeted for completion before Navratri and will be opened for devotees.
Parida directed the officials concerned to complete all construction and development works within the stipulated timeline without compromising on quality. She also stressed ensuring adequate facilities and convenience for devotees and tourists visiting the temple.
She said the Government is committed to developing Sikhar Chandi Temple as an important spiritual and tourism destination in Bhubaneswar.
Situated on a hilltop in the Patia area, the temple is a significant spiritual and cultural landmark and is associated with the region’s Yogini and tantric worship traditions.
According to local legend, Lord Shri Ram, along with Lakshmana and Goddess Sita, visited the place during their Banabasa. It is believed that Lakshmana drew an image of the Goddess on his bow, following which Maa Sikhar Chandi appeared at the spot.
The Goddess was initially worshipped as Laxman Chandi, according to the legend. A temple was later constructed at the site by the King of Patia. As the shrine is situated on the summit of a hill, it came to be known as Sikhar Chandi.
The temple attracts a large number of devotees, particularly during Durga Puja and Navratri, when special rituals and religious celebrations are organised.
Apart from its religious importance, the hilltop location is also popular among visitors for its scenic surroundings, peaceful ambience and trekking opportunities. The temple and its surroundings have emerged as a prominent spiritual and recreational destination in the city.
The name ‘Sikhar Chandi’ is derived from ‘Sikhar’, meaning peak, and ‘Chandi’, referring to the Goddess, reflecting the temple’s hilltop location and its association with the divine feminine.
