Of 82 police stations and outposts in Meghalaya, only 14 have functioning CCTV cameras

Shillong, June 24 (UNI) With CCTV cameras non-functional in most police stations of Meghalaya, officials are worried that this major security lapse remains unaddressed so far.

Of the 82 police stations and outposts in the state, an official said that only 14 of these police stations and outposts have CCTV cameras that are functional.

“The remaining police stations have CCTV cameras which are not functioning,” the official said on condition of anonymity.

It may be mentioned here that the Supreme Court in December 2020 has directed all states and union territories to install CCTV cameras with night vision and audio recording capabilities in all police stations.

This apex court directive aims to enhance transparency and accountability within police forces, particularly regarding custodial violence and human rights violations.

“The cameras are to be placed at all entry and exit points, main gates, lock-ups, corridors, lobbies, and reception areas, as well as outside lock-ups,” the official said.

The Supreme Court directed states to file compliance affidavits after completion of the installation of the CCTVs in 2023.

According to the official, the state government had installed CCTV cameras in most of the police stations sometime back, but most are now faulty.

“In each police station there were at least seven CCTV cameras installed after the Supreme Court ruling, most are not working now,” the official said.

Technical experts have inspected these faulty CCTVs and said these have stopped functioning due to lightning strikes.

“There are several pieces of equipment in police stations like wireless etc., which can be affected due to lightning, but all other equipment are working fine. So why only CCTVs,” the official wondered.

“Meghalaya receives heavy rainfall and lightning is also common. In such a scenario CCTV cameras should be able to withstand lightning strikes like any other electronic equipment. If at all lightning strikes are the cause of the defect in the CCTVs,” the official asked.

Meanwhile, the state police has been seeking from the government that big commercial establishments in the state must have mandatory CCTV cameras installed inside and outside the entrance.
