One arrested in Assam for allegedly killing Royal Bengal Tiger

Guwahati, May 22 (UNI) One person was arrested in Assam's Golaghat district on Thursday for his alleged involvement in killing a Royal Bengal Tiger,
The arrest took place following recovery of a carcass of an adult tiger from an area under Khumtai revenue circle during the day. Some parts of the tiger's body like the teeth, tail and claws were missing.
The people of the area were living in fear for the past several days after a big cat, possibly from the Kaziranga Tiger reserve, started praying in livestock in the adjoining villages. There was also reports of the tiger attacking a man and killing him a few days back.
Forest officials believe that the villagers, frustrated by repeated tiger attacks, killed the tiger.
"A case has been registered and we have arrested one person in this regard. Further investigation is on to find out the other culprits," said a local forest officer from Golaghat.
Some locals said that the tiger was spotted by some people on Thursday who then chased it down and fatally attacked it using sharp weapons.
Some locals came across the mutilated remains and promptly alerted the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Golaghat.
The DFO, along with a team of forest officials, visited the site and has launched an inquiry into the killing.
Locals, however, also slammed the role of the forest department as they failed to bring the tiger back to the forest. The locals said that they have informed the Kaziranga Tiger reserve authority about the straying of the big cat and sought help to take the tiger back to the forest by putting up cage or tranquilising it.
This is not the first instance of human-wildlife conflict or tiger mortality in Assam in recent months. The year 2025 has already seen two tiger deaths reported from Biswanath and Orang National Park. UNI AS SSP
