ONGC strikes gas in deepwater well off Odisha coast

Bhubaneswar, Sep 21 (UNI) State-owned ONGC has struck gas at a deepwater well in the Mahanadi Offshore Basin, about 43 km off Odisha’s Konark coast, as part of its Samudra Manthan exploration campaign, the company said on Monday.
The discovery was made at well MN-DW18-1-H-D, the first well drilled by ONGC under the campaign in the Mahanadi Basin. The well was drilled to a target depth of 1,623 metres, with gas encountered in the 1,441-1,452 metre interval, according to the company.
ONGC said the well has been flowing gas with encouraging flow rates and reservoir pressure for the past three days.
The well’s proximity to the coast could facilitate early monetisation of the discovery, subject to further appraisal and commercial evaluation, the company said.
The well was spudded on July 25 by union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
ONGC said the discovery strengthens its deepwater exploration programme and could contribute to expanding India’s domestic hydrocarbon resource base. Along with other discoveries in the area, the find could potentially be developed through shared facilities under the PNG Rules, 2025, it said.
ONGC Chairman and CEO Arun Kumar Singh, Director (Technology and Field Services) Vikram Saxena and Director (Exploration) O P Sinha had visited the drillship Platinum Explorer on August 27 and interacted with the drilling team, the release said.

New Delhi, Sep 21 (UNI) Nearly 40% of India's coal-fired power plants are operating with critically low fuel stocks, as electricity demand remains elevated amid hotter-than-usual weather conditions, according to government data released on Monday.
The number of power plants with critically low coal inventories rose to 74 as of September 19, up from around 60 a week earlier, data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) showed.
