Operation Drishti: Armed Forces conduct 364 eye surgeries in Kashmir

New Delhi, Oct 1 (UNI) The Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) has performed 364 sight-restoring eye surgeries across two mega surgical camps in Kashmir under Operation Drishti, extending advanced ophthalmic care to people in remote and forward areas of the Valley.
The 11th Mega Eye Surgical Camp under Operation Drishti concluded at 92 Base Hospital, Srinagar, on September 30, marking the completion of the Kashmir leg of the initiative. The surgical team from Army Hospital (Research & Referral) (AHRR), led by Brigadier Sanjay Kumar Mishra, conducted surgeries for cataract, glaucoma, pterygium and retinal conditions.
Ahead of the surgical camps, teams from 92 Base Hospital and 328 Field Hospital organised 18 screening camps in remote and forward areas, including Tangdhar, Dawar, Machil, Uri, Baramulla, Bandipora, Khanabal and Kangan.
Nearly 6,000 people were screened during the outreach programme, with around 500 patients identified as requiring surgical intervention. The identified beneficiaries were subsequently treated in two phases under Operation Drishti.
The first phase was held at Tangdhar, in the sensitive sector along the Line of Control, from September 24-25. It was the first mega eye surgical camp conducted at the LoC in an underground operation theatre.
The surgical team performed 220 eye surgeries over two days at Tangdhar, providing advanced ophthalmic care in a remote and operationally challenging environment.
The second phase was conducted at 92 Base Hospital, Srinagar, from September 28-29, where 144 patients underwent eye surgeries.
Besides cataract procedures, the Srinagar camp provided specialised interventions, including glued intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, glaucoma surgery, pterygium excision and retinal procedures for diabetic retinopathy.
Several patients with severely impaired vision reported significant improvement following the procedures, with some regaining clear vision as early as the next day.
