Over 14,000 injecting drug users recorded in Mizoram: MSACS

Aizawl, June 23 (UNI) As of May 2025, Mizoram has recorded 14,378 injecting drug users (IDUs), according to the latest data from the Mizoram State AIDS Control Society (MSACS).
Experts also expressed concern over the increasing use of cannabis among teenagers across the state.
The figures were revealed during a one-day seminar on drug abuse in Mizoram, organised by the MSACS.
Speaking at the event, MSACS Project Director Dr. Jane Rinsangi Ralte said that their latest survey shows a total of 14,378 individuals who inject drugs in the state. The majority of IDUs fall within the 18 to 42 age group.
Among the districts, Aizawl reported the highest number of injecting drug users with 5,986 cases, while Saitual recorded the lowest at 313. Of the total IDUs, 5,298 are reported to inject drugs daily, while 9,080 do so occasionally.
In terms of marital status, 58.32% of the users are never married, 18.70% are currently married, 15.78% are divorced, 5.17% live with long-term partners, and 2.03% are widowed.
A family status survey of the users reveals that 59.43% live with their parents and siblings, while 29.51% come from broken families. Another 8.40% are homeless, and 2.66% live alone. Regarding occupation, 57.39% are daily wage labourers, 32.43% are unemployed, and 10.17% have salaried jobs.
During the seminar, Joint Commissioner of the Excise & Narcotics Department, Peter Zohmingthanga, highlighted the alarming trend of cannabis use among teenagers.
He stated that over the past five years, the Excise Department has seized increasing quantities of cannabis, including 883.984 kg in 2024 alone.
He attributed the rise in cannabis seizures to growing demand among adolescents, with reports even indicating some users starting as early as Class 3. Most of the seized cannabis is trafficked from Tripura, while some have also been intercepted coming from the Shillong area, hidden among smoked meat products.
Central YMA treasurer Roneihthanga also voiced concern, stating that cannabis use among young people has become so widespread that some groups have even formed informal "weed smokers' associations" in certain areas.
