Paleru Sagar UT works to be completed by July 10: Minister

Hyderabad, May 23 (UNI) Telangana Revenue, Housing, Information and Public RelIations Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy on Friday directed officials to expedite the ongoing construction of the Nagarjuna Sagar Left Main Canal Under Tunnel (UT) in Paleru, Khammam district, with a firm deadline of July 10 to release irrigation water in time for the monsoon season.
The Minister conducted a surprise inspection of the works at Jujjularaopet in Kusumanchi mandal on Friday, where repairs are being carried out on a crucial stretch of the canal near the Paleru Reservoir.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Reddy stated that the canal’s Under Tunnel section was damaged by heavy rains in September last year, disrupting irrigation supply to farmers.
“Though temporary arrangements were made to supply water last season, permanent restoration has now begun at a cost of Rs 14.20 crore,” he noted.
The restoration of the UT canal is critical, as it serves as a lifeline for agriculture in Khammam district. Once completed, it will irrigate approximately four lakh acres, including 1.33 lakh acres in the Paleru constituency alone.
To ensure timely completion, the Minister instructed that the construction be treated as top priority, with work carried out in two shifts daily if necessary.
“We cannot afford any delay. Farmers are depending on this canal for the upcoming season,” he stressed.
The Minister assured that the government is fully committed to safeguarding farmers’ interests and ensuring water reaches their fields without fail.
