Palwal Police warn job seekers against work-from-home, fake recruitment scams

Palwal, Oct 18 (UNI) Palwal Police, on Sunday, warned job seekers against cyber fraudsters posing as recruiters of reputed companies and demanding money for registration, document verification, security deposits and training materials after issuing fake appointment letters.
Issuing a special advisory on the 18th day of National Cyber Awareness Month, Superintendent of Police Deepti Garg said cybercriminals were targeting unemployed youths and other job seekers through fraudulent work-from-home offers promising high monthly earnings.
She said fraudsters were using social media platforms, WhatsApp, Telegram and fake recruitment portals to advertise lucrative employment opportunities and lure unsuspecting applicants.
According to police, the fraudsters create fake human resources profiles in the names of established companies, conduct sham online interviews and send forged appointment letters to prospective candidates.
They subsequently demand payments towards registration fees, document verification charges, security deposits, training kits or laptop delivery expenses.
Once the victims transfer money into the specified bank accounts, the fraudsters allegedly sever contact and deactivate their mobile numbers.
Police also warned that personal identification documents, educational certificates and banking details shared with fraudulent recruiters could be misused for other illegal activities.
"Do not trust unverified job offers or appointment letters received from unknown numbers through social media, SMS or WhatsApp without proper verification," Garg said.
She advised applicants to independently verify recruitment offers through the concerned company's official website, authorised recruitment portal and verified contact details before making any payment or sharing personal information.
The police chief said demands for advance payments in exchange for employment or interviews should be treated as a serious warning sign.
She also cautioned against transferring money to unknown recruitment agencies or consultants without verifying their credentials.
Garg urged victims of recruitment and work-from-home scams to immediately report the fraud through the national cyber crime helpline 1930 or the government portal www.cybercrime.gov.in.
Prompt reporting, particularly in the initial hours after a fraudulent transaction, could improve the chances of freezing the transferred funds and recovering the money, police said.
The advisory forms part of Palwal Police's month-long cybercrime awareness campaign aimed at preventing online financial fraud and protecting job seekers.
