Panchkula Police smash ATM card-swap gang: Two held, 70 cards and POS machine seized

Panchkula, Oct 15 (UNI) Panchkula Police have busted a cyber fraud gang that allegedly targeted elderly and less-educated people at ATMs, tricking them into revealing their PINs and then draining their bank accounts.
Acting on a tip-off, the Cyber Crime Police Station, Sector 20, arrested two accused and recovered 70 ATM cards, a POS machine and two mobile phones.
The accused are Manoj Kumar, a resident of Hisar, and Anil, a resident of Bhiwani.
On October 14, the Cyber Crime team learned that two young men were moving suspiciously around ATMs of different banks in the Sector 20 market, carrying a large number of cards and a POS machine.
A team led by SHO Yudhveer Singh rushed to the spot, cordoned off the area and caught both suspects.
DCP Crime and Traffic Amrinder Singh said 43 ATM cards of different banks were recovered from Manoj Kumar, while 27 cards and the POS machine were recovered from Anil.
All items were seized as per procedure.
A case was registered on October 14, 2026, at Cyber Crime Police Station, Sector 20, under Sections 318(4) and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
During preliminary questioning, the accused allegedly admitted that they picked out vulnerable victims, tricked them into disclosing their PINs and swapped their genuine cards with similar-looking ones.
They then allegedly withdrew cash from different ATMs. They also allegedly picked up cards left behind in ATM machines and used the POS machine to withdraw money.
Commissioner of Police Pankaj Nain said the alertness and swift action of Panchkula Police stopped the gang before it could commit further offences.
He urged the public never to share ATM PINs with anyone, never to hand over cards to strangers and to stay alert to card-swapping tricks.
Police are now probing the role of other gang members, who arranged the POS machine, the alleged commission involved and the mobile phones used in the crimes.
Officers will also identify the ATMs in Haryana and Delhi where the accused allegedly picked up cards or withdrew money.
Further investigation is underway.
