Pawan Khera seeks answers on 10.2 cr names excluded in SIR

New Delhi, Sep 27 (UNI) Congress leader Pawan Khera on Sunday sought an explanation for the fate of 10.2 crore names excluded from electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), after the BJP said around 2.8 crore of the 13 crore excluded voters were deceased.
In a post on social media platform X, Khera said, “13 crore voters have been removed under the SIR. The BJP says 2.8 crore were deceased voters. Fair enough. What about the remaining 10.2 crore?”
Khera also questioned the effectiveness of the annual Summary Revisions conducted since 2014, asking whether the presence of 2.8 crore deceased voters on the rolls indicated that the electoral-roll maintenance system had failed to identify and remove such names earlier.
“And if 2.8 crore dead people were still on the rolls, were the annual Summary Revisions since 2014 really that shoddy?” he asked.
The Congress leader further questioned whether the BJP was acknowledging a prolonged failure in maintaining electoral rolls. “Is the BJP admitting that it has failed for years to maintain electoral rolls properly? If not, where did the other 10.2 crore names go?” he said.
Khera’s remarks come amid a continuing political confrontation over the SIR exercise being conducted by the Election Commission to undertake extensive verification of electoral rolls.
The exercise provides for identification of electors who are deceased, shifted, absent or enrolled at multiple places, with the reasons for non-inclusion of names subject to scrutiny through the claims-and-objections process.
The Election Commission has maintained that electoral rolls are periodically revised to identify and remove names of deceased, permanently shifted and duplicate electors, subject to prescribed verification procedures. The Commission’s established mechanisms also allow eligible voters to check their entries and file claims and objections for inclusion or correction.
The scale of exclusions under the SIR has, however, become a major political issue, with opposition parties seeking greater clarity over the category-wise break-up of names left out of the draft rolls and safeguards for genuine voters. Khera’s latest intervention has focused specifically on the gap between the 2.8 crore deceased electors cited by the BJP and the remaining 10.2 crore names, raising questions about the reasons for their exclusion and the effectiveness of electoral-roll revisions undertaken in previous years.
