PM in Kerala to inaugurate Vizhinjam Seaport

Thiruvananthapuram, May 1 (UNI) In view of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Kerala capital to inaugurate Vizhinjam International Seaport, tight security has been imposed and traffic regulations are in place on May 1 and 2.

"In light of the upcoming VVIP visit in Thiruvananthapuram, traffic regulations will be in effect on May 1 and 2. We kindly advise passengers to allow extra travel time when heading to the airport," a message from the International airport said.

The traffic regulations were in place from 10 am on May 1 and will continue until the conclusion of the PM's visit on May 2.

Air passengers heading to the domestic terminal are advised to use the Pettah–Chackai flyover–Eanchakkal–Killipalam–Papanamcode–Vellayambalam route.

Those heading to the International Airport are advised to use the Pettah–Chackai Flyover–Eanchakkal–Killipalam–Anayara Medical College service road route. People are advised to contact 9497930055 or 0471-2558731 for traffic queries.

The Prime Minister will reach here on Thursday at 7.50 pm and stay at Raj Bhavan.

On May 2, Modi will visit Pangode Military Station at 9.30 am and will take a helicopter to Vizhinjam at 10.30 am. He will be given a warm reception at the mother ship MSC Celestino Maresca. The inaugural ceremony will take place at 11 am.

Later, he will return to Pangode Military Station from there he will proceed to Raj Bhavan, and leave for Hyderabad at 12.30 pm.

The inaugural function will be attended by Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Kerala BJP President Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister for Ports Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Ministers Suresh Gopi and George Kurian, Kerala Minister VN. Vasavan, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani and his son Karan Adani.

Earlier, Pinarayi Vijayan said the Prime Minister will dedicate India’s first semi-automated transshipment port to the nation on the day.

With 265 ships and 5.48 lakh TEUs handled since its commercial launch, the port marks Kerala’s rise on the global maritime trade map.

India’s first Mega Transshipment Container Terminal 'Vizhinjam International Seaport' is a monumental achievement for Kerala, he said.

After visiting the Port, he said "Witnessed world-class facilities and reviewed operations that rival the best globally. Vizhinjam stands as a proud testament to Kerala’s historic progress over the past nine years."

Earlier, the Kerala Cabinet has approved a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for an underground railway line linking Vizhinjam Port and Balaramapuram Railway Station.

With an investment of Rs 1,482.92 crore, this transformative project targeted for completion by December 2028.
