New Delhi, June 27 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the centenary celebrations of Acharya Shri 108 Vidyanand Ji Maharaj, one of modern India’s most revered Jain spiritual leaders, at a formal ceremony in the national capital tomorrow.
Organised by the Ministry of Culture in association with the Bhagwan Mahaveer Ahimsa Bharti Trust, the programme marks the commencement of a year-long national tribute to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of the Acharya — a renowned scholar, philosopher, and social reformer, according to a government statement here.
Acharya Vidyanand Ji Maharaj, a profound authority on Jain philosophy, is credited with memorising over 8,000 verses from Jain Agamas and authoring more than 50 seminal works, including Jain Darshan, Anekantvad, and Mokshmarg Darshan.
His contributions extended beyond scholarship — he played a pivotal role in the restoration of ancient Jain temples in Delhi, Vaishali, Indore, and Shravanabelagola, said the statement.
A large number of spiritual gurus from the sect are slated to attend the programme, during which the Prime Minister is also expected to deliver the keynote address, reflecting on the Acharya’s enduring legacy. A commemorative postage stamp and coin will be released by the Ministry of Culture and a short documentary film chronicling the life and work of the Acharya will be screened.
The most revered monk’s identification of Kundgram (now Basokund) in Bihar as the birthplace of Lord Mahavir was officially recognised by the Government in 1956. It remains one of his most celebrated contributions to Jain heritage.
The statement also said the centenary year will witness a series of programmes across India, aimed at community engagement, youth participation, interfaith dialogue, and Jain heritage awareness. These initiatives will seek to carry forward the Acharya’s timeless message to future generations. UNI AJ SSP
