Polavaram Cotton Saree becomes 22nd GI to be filed from AP

Hyderabad, May 21 (UNI) Polavaram Cotton saree becomes the 22nd Geographical Indication (GI) filed from Andhra Pradesh recently.
The application has been numbered as 1539 and filed on May 19, 2025 and this is the 22nd GI application from the state of Andhra Pradesh.
Before this, Madahavmala Wood Carvings and Palamner Terracota have been filed.
Subhajit Saha, GI practitioner, filed the GI application for Polavaram Cotton Handloom Weavers Mutually Aided Co-operative Society Limited.
Currrently, 1547 Applications have been filed in India with 697 GIs registered as of the date.
In a release, Mr Saha mentioned that there are 3 More products in the pipeline to be filed shortly, making it to the 25 GIs from the state of AP.
Polavaram Cotton Sarees are a distinctive handwoven textile tradition originating from the Polavaram and Bandar regions of Andhra Pradesh.
Renowned for their fine texture and lightweight feel, these sarees are crafted using high-count cotton yarns—often up to 100s—which contribute to their soft touch and superior drape.
A hallmark feature is the elegant cotton borders, typically with the knack of non-shrinking cotton border nature and often accompanied by intricate butta (motif) work and jacquard pallus.
The sarees are usually uni-colored, with design emphasis on the border and pallu, making them both subtle and sophisticated. Their breathable texture and vibrant, long-lasting colors make them especially suitable for hot climates, and they are very light in weight compared to other sarees.
The Polavaram Cotton Sarees trace their origin to the culturally rich Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, particularly the weaving clusters around Polavaram and Bandar (Machilipatnam).
This region has a long-standing tradition of cotton weaving, dating back several centuries when Machilipatnam functioned as a prominent port under various dynasties, including the Qutb Shahis and the Dutch.
The strategic location of the region enabled the flourishing of textile exports, and over time, it evolved into a significant center for handloom production.
With the current Miss World Event 2025 being hosted in Telangana, the concept of GI tourism is picking up, as we have seen the Miss World contestants visiting Warangal, Hyderabad, Laad Bazaar, and Pochampally to witness the art and GI products from these places.
Saha believes that GI tourism will be a game-changer in the coming years by connecting People, Places, and Products, thereby boosting the State and Nation’s Economy.
