Police stop three Karnataka ministers at Dasara event

Mysuru, Oct 21 (UNI) A confrontation between Karnataka Culture Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi and a senior police officer during the Mysuru Dasara Jamboo Savari celebrations on Wednesday triggered a social media storm, after the minister objected to being stopped from proceeding to the official ceremony despite holding a Cabinet position.
“I am the Culture Minister,” Tangadagi reportedly told the officer before moving ahead, in an exchange captured on video that subsequently went viral.
The incident occurred as Chief Minister DK Shivakumar was proceeding towards the dais to formally inaugurate the Vijayadashami procession and offer floral tributes to Goddess Chamundeshwari. Tangadagi, Muzrai Minister KS Basavanthappa and Agriculture Minister PM Narendra Swamy were following the Chief Minister when a senior IPS officer reportedly stopped them, citing the absence of permission to proceed.
The situation was resolved after Shivakumar turned around and signalled to the police personnel, allowing the three ministers to move towards the venue.
The episode drew sharply divided reactions on social media. While some users ridiculed the situation in which elected ministers were stopped from proceeding to an official event, others questioned the police officer's actions. The circumstances behind the restriction were not immediately clear.
The brief altercation became an unexpected talking point at the annual festival, shifting attention momentarily from the ceremonial procession to the exchange between the ministers and the police.
The Jamboo Savari, the centrepiece of Mysuru's Vijayadashami celebrations, was attended by several political leaders and senior officials. Following the procession, Shivakumar and his wife, Usha, offered floral tributes to Goddess Chamundeshwari at the Mysuru Palace premises.
Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan and Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy also participated in the celebrations.
Among those present were Yathindra Siddaramaiah, royal family representative and Mysuru-Kodagu MP Yaduveer Wadiyar, Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, Deputy Commissioner Lakshmikanth Reddy and Police Commissioner Seema Latkar.
The viral video has put the spotlight on protocol and coordination between police personnel and elected representatives during a high-profile public event.
