Police yet to establish who paid Rs 2 crore for Chandranath Rath’s murder: Suvendu

Kolkata, Oct 28 (UNI): After the oath-taking ceremony of two newly elected MLAs- Hasirani Rath and Sakharov Sarkar, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said in the Assembly on Wednesday that the police investigation was yet to establish who had paid the Rs 2 crore contract money to the killers of Chandranath Rath.
“Seven people have already been arrested in the case. The only thing left to establish through the police investigation is who had given the Rs 2 crore supari for the murder. Whether it was given from Camac Street, Diamond Harbour or Kalighat will become clear, completing the chain of investigation,” Adhikari said in the assembly.
Earlier two BJP legislators, Hasirani Rath and Sakharov Sarkar, who won the by-elections in Nandigram and Rejinagar respectively took the oath of office in the presence of the Speaker Rathindra Bose at the West Bengal Assembly.
Referring to Chandranath Rath, the son of Hasirani Rath and his former aide, Adhikari alleged that he had been brutally murdered because of his association with him.
The chief minister also explained why he had chosen to retain Nandigram instead of Bhabanipur after winning both seats.
Taking a swipe at former chief minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee, he said that vacating Bhabanipur would have given her another opportunity to contest a by-election.
“If I had vacated that seat, she would have got another opportunity to contest a by-election. At this age, she should not be doing all this. She has grown old and should take rest,” Adhikari said.
He also targeted the previous ruling party over the BJP's victories in the two by-elections, claiming that the opposition had conceded defeat in Nandigram even before polling.
In Rejinagar, he said, the opposition had failed to save its security deposit.
Rejecting the charge that the BJP was a communal party, Adhikari cited the Rejinagar result to claim that the party had received support from minority voters.
“Muslim sisters in Rejinagar who have received benefits under the Annapurna Bhandar scheme also voted for us,” he said.
Pointing to the constituency's demographic composition, Adhikari claimed that BJP candidate Shararov Sarkar had secured a lead of more than 75,000 votes in minority-dominated areas, despite only around 100 of the nearly 300 polling booths being dominated by Sanatani voters.
“We are Sanatanis, we are Hindus and we wear tilak on our foreheads. But when it comes to running the government, we rise above the narrow interests of the party and give the highest priority to the development of all people,” he said.
