Islamabad, May 20 (UNI) Pakistan's federal cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, today approved the proposal to promote Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir to the rank of field marshal.
The decision comes in recognition of his "unparalleled military leadership" during the "Marka-e-Haq" conflict with India.
The federal cabinet meeting discussed a five-point agenda, including the country’s overall political, economic, and security situation, as well as budget proposals for the next fiscal year.
The key highlight of the meeting was the unanimous approval of General Asim Munir’s elevation in military rank — a rare honour in Pakistan’s history.
The PM is said to have met President Asif Ali Zardari and taken him into confidence on the decision to promote the army chief.
According to the cabinet, the promotion was granted "to acknowledge General Asim Munir’s brilliant military leadership, bravery, and commitment to defending Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity".
The cabinet also announced that individuals who served in 'Operation Bunyan-un-Marsous' against India will be awarded high-level national honours. Officers, soldiers, martyrs, war veterans, and individuals from various fields who contributed to the national cause will also be honoured in recognition of their services.
In another key decision, the government has decided to extend the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu, in recognition of his services and leadership during the recent conflict.
