Power not important to Modi: Yediyurappa and BJP leaders

Bengaluru/Shikaripur, Sep 17 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 25-year public life was on Thursday described by senior BJP leaders in Karnataka as a journey driven by national service rather than the pursuit of power, as the party marked his 76th birthday with prayers and a series of public-oriented programmes across the state.
Former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said Modi's political journey represented "service, achievement and dedication" and that power was not his primary objective.
"Power is not important to Modi; his journey is one of purposeful service to the nation," Yediyurappa said while participating in a special puja and Ganga Aarti at Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Maidan in Malleswaram-Subramanyanagar's Milk Colony here.
Yediyurappa said Modi's birthday should be observed as a day of service and that his 25 years in public life should inspire people.
Recalling Modi's tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister and subsequent service as Prime Minister, he said India had demonstrated its capabilities to the world under Modi's leadership.
"Atmanirbhar Bharat is no longer a country that follows others. It has become a country that charts its own path," Yediyurappa said.
He cited housing for the poor, support for farmers, women's empowerment, opportunities for youth and technology-enabled services for ordinary citizens as key elements of Modi's development model.
Yediyurappa said Modi was working towards the goal of making India a developed nation by 2047 and urged people to pray for his continued well-being and light lamps seeking divine blessings for him.
In Shikaripur, BJP Karnataka president Vijayendra Yediyurappa offered special prayers at Sri Huchchurayaswamy Temple and said Modi had completed 25 years in public service, beginning as Gujarat Chief Minister in 2001 and continuing as Prime Minister since 2014.
"Modi has completed 25 years in public service and continues to work tirelessly for the welfare of the people. I pray that God grants him a long life and good health," Vijayendra said.
He said ensuring justice for the last person in society and taking government benefits to every section remained among Modi's key objectives.
Vijayendra said the BJP's month-long 'Seva Sankalpa' programme would begin on Thursday, with party workers reaching out to people across the state.
Workers at booths in all 224 Assembly constituencies would participate in a Deepa Prajwalana programme at 7 pm, he said.
Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka said the birthday was being marked through tree plantation, blood donation camps and cultural programmes.
