Pretorius, Bosch tons power SA to 418/9 on Day 1

Bulawayo, June 28 (UNI) A brilliant 153-run knock by LG Pretorius and a stunning unbeaten century by Corbin Bosch headlined South Africa’s dominant performance with the bat as they ended Day 1 of their first Test against Zimbabwe at 418 for 9 at the Queens Sports Club here today.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss, South Africa had a shaky start, reduced to 23 for 3 inside 15 overs as Zimbabwe’s pacers made early inroads. Wiaan Mulder was left trying to steady the innings at drinks, with just 8 to his name. The visitors crawled to 50 in 21.6 overs and were 90 for 4 at lunch, with LG Pretorius taking charge at 44* and Dewald Brevis contributing 10.
Post-lunch, the duo shifted gears. Pretorius brought up his half-century off just 53 balls, while Brevis followed with a blistering 50 off 38 deliveries that included four sixes and three boundaries. The fifth-wicket stand yielded 50 runs in just 46 balls, laying the foundation for a recovery.
Pretorius continued his fine form, reaching a century off 112 balls and stretching the partnership further with the lower order. At tea, South Africa had progressed to 248/6, with Pretorius unbeaten on 128 and Bosch settling in.
Bosch took over the scoring post-tea, notching up his half-century in 77 balls before completing a magnificent hundred off 124 balls. The seventh-wicket stand with Pretorius fetched 100 runs off 130 balls. By the 88th over, South Africa had crossed 400 with Bosch anchoring the tail alongside Codi Yusuf (27) and Kwena Maphaka.
The day ended with South Africa firmly on top at 418 for 9 in 90 overs, thanks to Bosch’s unbeaten 100 and Maphaka’s resilience at the crease.
South Africa will look to stretch the total further on Day 2, while Zimbabwe will aim to wrap up the tail quickly and respond strongly with the bat.
