Prominent Odia film personalities call for Government support for authentic Odia storytelling

Bhubaneswar, May 19 (UNI) Leading figures from the Odia film industry on Monday urged the Odisha government to extend support for the production of films based on authentic Odia stories and to empower those working within the film fraternity.
They also recommended that the government enhance film production infrastructure in the state, increase the number of cinema halls, make cinema ticket prices more affordable for the general public, establish a dedicated film archive, and create a separate platform to promote OTT and digital content.
The meeting was attended by prominent producers, directors, actors, writers, and musicians of the state. It was chaired by actor-turned-politician and Digapahandi MLA Sidhant Mohapatra, under the aegis of the Department of Odia Language, Literature, and Culture. The discussion focused on the holistic development of the Odia film industry and its stakeholders.
Key issues addressed included expanding the reach and promotion of Odia cinema, instituting regular Odisha State Film Awards, and providing systematic support to those involved in the filmmaking ecosystem.
Proposals emphasized ensuring the timely annual conferment of the State Film Awards, the inclusion of jury members and chairpersons with backgrounds in art and cinema—particularly from among the youth—raising the prize amounts, expanding the current 33 award categories, and developing a dedicated website featuring detailed information about nominated and award-winning films and artists.
The participants also deliberated on the need for a new film policy, government subsidies for film production, the strengthening of the Odisha Film Development Corporation Ltd., and the modernization of Kalinga Studio's infrastructure.
Among the attendees were well-known film personalities such as Arindam Roy, Shritam Das, Sabyasachi Mishra, Harihar Mohapatra, Archita Sahu, Pinky Pradhan, Anu Choudhury, musicians Debasish Mahapatra and Panchanan Nayak, former Doordarshan Director Deepti Mishra, and Director of the Department of Odia Language, Literature, and Culture, Bijaya Ketan Upadhyaya.
