Punjab: Congress leaders slam AAP, BJP during 'Save Constitution' rally

Hoshiarpur, June 14 (UNI) Punjab Congress chief and MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the AAP-led Punjab government and the BJP-led Centre during the ‘Samvidhan Bachao Muhim’ (Save the Constitution campaign) rally held in the Sham Churasi constituency.
Addressing party workers, Warring alleged that the BJP was attempting to alter the Constitution and said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had firmly opposed such moves ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
He said the campaign to protect the Constitution, drafted by Dr BR Ambedkar, was gaining momentum across the country.
He targeted the RSS, claiming the organisation did not hoist the National Flag at its office for 55 years and had never appointed a woman to any key post. “In contrast, Congress gave India its first woman Prime Minister and has always respected women,” he said.
Criticising the AAP government, Warring accused it of failing to fulfil its promise of making Punjab drug-free by May 31.
He alleged that the drug crisis persists across the state and criticised the government’s handling of the issue. "The youth need employment, not arrests," he said, calling for a humane and comprehensive approach to tackling the menace.
He said the state government was spending heavily on advertisements while key departments, including revenue, police, and power, were facing a severe staff shortage.
On the agrarian front, he said farmers continued to face delays in sugarcane payments and demanded MSP-backed alternatives to paddy to help address Punjab’s water crisis.
In his address, Bajwa alleged that Chief Minister Mann was functioning as a “puppet” of former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. “It is Bibhav Kumar who is operating the govt. Departments in Punjab are being controlled by Delhi leaders like Manish Sisodia, Satyendar Jain and Vijay Nair,” he claimed.
He also alleged large-scale recruitment of non-Punjabis in government jobs, sidelining local youth. Bajwa mocked the CM, saying, “He neither has ‘Singh’ in his name nor ‘kesh’ (uncut hair) under his turban.”
The Congress leaders condemned the desecration of Dr Ambedkar’s statues and accused the government of inaction. Bajwa further alleged rampant bribery and illegal mining in the name of dam cleaning and criticised the AAP government over its reported standoff with HDFC Bank.
Both leaders also alleged that the Chief Minister was unfit to tackle the drug issue, claiming he was a habitual drinker.
