Rahul Gandhi tells Modi to sack Gyanesh Kumar, says Delhi protests will end in 30 seconds

New Delhi, Oct 26 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to remove Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, declaring that protests over alleged electoral malpractice in the national capital would end within 30 seconds if the government acted on the Opposition’s demand. Appealing directly to Delhi’s trading community, Gandhi accused the government of disrupting business and daily life through metro closures and road restrictions amid the ongoing agitation over alleged vote theft.
“To every trader in Delhi: We love you and hear you,” Gandhi said in a message posted on social media, seeking to draw attention to the difficulties faced by traders and other residents because of restrictions imposed during the protests.
“The government shut the metro, sealed our roads and locked down our capital,” he said, blaming the authorities for the disruption and inconvenience caused to people in the national capital.
Linking the Opposition’s allegations of electoral irregularities to the economic security of ordinary citizens, Gandhi said, “With a stolen vote nothing is safe — your shop, your savings, your children’s future.”
He then issued a direct challenge to the Prime Minister, saying, “Tell Modi to sack accused number four, Gyanesh Kumar, and the protests will stop in 30 seconds.” Gandhi’s reference to Kumar as “accused number four” formed part of his political attack on the Chief Election Commissioner over the Opposition’s allegations concerning the electoral process.
The message, also issued in Hindi, reiterated Gandhi’s appeal to traders and sought to connect concerns over business losses and restricted movement with the wider political dispute over the integrity of elections. He argued that the government could bring the agitation to an immediate end by removing Kumar, while maintaining that the disruption in Delhi was the result of decisions taken by the authorities.
The remarks come amid an intensifying confrontation between the Congress-led Opposition and the Election Commission over electoral transparency, the credibility of the voting process and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition parties have alleged that aspects of the revision exercise and other electoral practices could result in legitimate voters being excluded from electoral rolls. They have demanded greater accountability from the poll panel and action against the Chief Election Commissioner.
The Election Commission, meanwhile, has defended its role in revising electoral rolls, maintaining that the exercise falls within its statutory responsibilities.
By addressing traders directly, Gandhi sought to broaden the appeal of the Opposition’s campaign beyond political parties and electoral institutions, highlighting the potential consequences of protest-related restrictions for commercial activity and livelihoods. His message framed the dispute as one extending beyond allegations of vote theft to questions of public confidence in elections, the functioning of constitutional institutions and the everyday economic concerns of people living and working in the national capital.
