Railways approves 49 Km rail projects in Maha at Rs 990 Cr

New Delhi, Sep 18 (UNI) Indian Railways has approved two major railway infrastructure projects in Maharashtra with a combined investment of nearly Rs 990 crore, aimed at improving regional connectivity, increasing network capacity and facilitating faster movement of passengers and freight.
The projects include a 38.21-km new rail line between Mukutban in Yavatmal district and Gadchandur in Chandrapur district, sanctioned for Rs 493 crore, and the 10.86-km doubling of the Chouk-Karjat section of Central Railway, estimated to cost Rs 497 crore.
The new Mukutban-Gadchandur line will strengthen connectivity between two important industrial and mining centres in eastern Maharashtra.
Mukutban is located in Yavatmal district, while Gadchandur falls in Chandrapur district.
The region has several cement plants, coal mines operated by Western Coalfields Ltd and limestone mines.
The new railway corridor is expected to provide a shorter route for freight movement, reducing transportation distance, travel time and logistics costs.
It will also provide an alternative route to the existing Wardha-Manikgarh section, helping ease congestion and improve the movement of freight trains.
According to the Detailed Project Report, the line is expected to handle around 6.08 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of freight traffic after commissioning.
The freight basket is expected to include coal and coke, cement, sponge iron, metal scrap, iron and steel, fertilisers and foodgrains, among other commodities.
The project will also support passenger movement, with two MEMU trains in each direction every day planned after commissioning.
The Mukutban-Gadchandur line will establish direct connectivity between the coal and cement-producing cluster and the Majri-Nanded route.
This is expected to shorten freight leads for coal, cement and RMSP traffic headed towards destinations such as Jalna, Parbhani and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, as well as other locations in Maharashtra and Karnataka.
The additional corridor is also expected to reduce reliance on the congested Balharshah-Nagpur High-Density Network (HDN) route.
Better rail connectivity in parts of Yavatmal and Chandrapur could support industrial activity and improve access to markets for businesses operating in the region.
Separately, Indian Railways has approved the doubling of the 10.86-km Chouk-Karjat section of Central Railway at an estimated cost of Rs 497 crore.
The section forms part of the Panvel-Chouk-Karjat route, which handles both passenger and freight traffic.
At present, the stretch is a single-line section, and the addition of a second line is expected to increase capacity and improve train operations.
Once completed, the project is expected to enable five additional passenger trains in each direction per day.
It is also projected to facilitate an additional 18.35 MTPA of freight traffic and reduce the detention of freight trains.
Together, the two projects will add new capacity to Maharashtra's railway network, provide alternative routes for freight traffic and improve passenger connectivity.
The investments are also expected to support the movement of key industrial commodities while allowing more efficient utilisation of existing railway infrastructure. UNI VK SAS
