Railways notifies centralised test syllabus for Group B promotions from 2027

New Delhi, Oct 8 (UNI) The Railway Board has finalised the syllabus for centralised Computer-Based Tests (CBT) and Tablet-Based Tests (TBT) for promotion to Group 'B' posts in miscellaneous and isolated cadres across Indian Railways for the vacancy cycle from January 1, 2027, to December 31, 2028.
In an order dated September 29, the Board notified cadre-wise professional subject syllabus along with a common syllabus covering establishment and financial rules for the departmental promotional examinations.
The directive, issued to General Managers of all zonal railways, production units and training institutes, follows earlier Railway Board communications dated January 23 and April 16, 2026, announcing the introduction of centralised examinations.
The Board said the centralised CBT/TBT system was being introduced for promotions to Group 'B' posts in miscellaneous and isolated cadres for the common two-year vacancy cycle.
Under the new framework, candidates will be examined on professional subjects relevant to their respective cadres, besides common establishment and financial rules.
The Railway Board has also incorporated the four consolidated Labour Codes into the examination syllabus, directing that references to earlier labour laws be replaced by the relevant provisions of the new codes, wherever applicable.
These include the Code on Wages, 2019; Industrial Relations Code, 2020; Code on Social Security, 2020; and Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020.
The Board clarified that wherever the notified syllabi refer to earlier labour Acts or laws, the corresponding provisions of the four Labour Codes should be read in their place, as applicable.
The order marks a shift towards a common examination framework for departmental promotions in the specified railway cadres, with the notified syllabi forming the basis for the centralised tests.
The notification, issued with the approval of the competent authority, was signed by Railway Board Joint Director (Establishment-GC) Bubble Yadav.
