Rain, thunderstorm and windstorm disrupt normal life in Himachal Pradesh

Shimla, May 22 (UNI) Normal life was disrupted in many parts of Himachal Pradesh due to widespread thunderstorm activity, gusty winds, and moderate rainfall, as per the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) bulletin on Thursday.
Several areas including Palampur (24.4 mm), Solan (21.8 mm), Olinda (41.0 mm), BBMB (36.0 mm), and Slapper (33.5 mm) received significant rainfall. Thunderstorms, lightning, and hailstorms were reported from various locations including Shimla, Bhuntar, Kangra, Jubberhatti, and Palampur. Media reports also confirmed hailstorms in Bangana Revenue and Una districts.
Gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 80 kmph were recorded in Kufri, while Bilaspur reported 70 kmph, and Shimla experienced winds at 54 kmph. These high-velocity winds led to temporary power outages, uprooting of trees, and disruption of traffic in several hilly and urban areas.
The IMD has attributed the adverse weather conditions to a persisting upper air cyclonic circulation over Punjab and adjoining areas. The department has issued a warning for isolated thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (40–60 kmph) in the coming days.
While minimum temperatures dropped by 2–5°C in many areas, the mercury in Una soared to a maximum of 41°C — the highest in the state. Meanwhile, Kukumseri recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 7.1°C.
The meteorological centre in Shimla has advised the public to stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid travel in exposed areas, particularly in view of the ongoing weather warnings.
