Rain wreaked havoc in UP: 58 killed in incidents

Lucknow, Sept 27 (UNI) Rain wreaked havoc in Uttar Pradesh due to cyclone Arnab, as more than 58 people lost their lives in different incidents during the past 48 hours.
With heavy downpours accompanied by strong winds lashing the Terai region, Bundelkhand and other areas, with over 200 mm of rain falling in about 10 districts.
On Sunday morning, light rain continued in Lucknow and surrounding districts.
The rains caused daytime temperatures to drop well below normal in many districts. Bareilly recorded a maximum temperature of 21.3 degrees Celsius, the lowest in September observation history. Etawah, Shahjahanpur, Moradabad, and Agra also recorded their coldest September days so far.
The Meteorological Department says that heavy rain is expected in many areas of the state on Sunday as well. An orange alert for very heavy rain has been issued in Moradabad, Rampur, Pilibhit, and Bareilly. A yellow alert for heavy rain has been issued in nine other Terai districts.
Thunderstorms and gusty winds with speeds of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour are possible in 27 districts of the state.
On Saturday, Lakhimpur Kheri received the highest rainfall of 342 mm. Sitapur recorded 273.2 mm, Banda 245.6 mm, and Bahraich 239 mm.
Atul Kumar Singh, senior scientist at the Regional Meteorological Center, said rainfall activity in the state is expected to decrease from Monday.
The downpour that began after midnight on Thursday in Uttar Pradesh continued until Saturday evening. It rained so heavily that it became a disaster for the people. In many places, mud houses collapsed. Fallen trees and poles blocked roads. Power supply was disrupted due to uprooted poles and broken power lines.
Rain-related accidents have claimed the lives of 58 people across the state.
The maximum number of 26 deaths in rain-related accidents occurred in the districts of Awadh.
These include six deaths in Sitapur, five in Bahraich, four each in Balrampur and Ayodhya, three in Barabanki, two in Gonda, one each in Amethi and Shravasti. Two people died in Mainpuri and one in Etah in the Braj region. Six people died in Lakhimpur Kheri and five in Gorakhpur.
Four people died in Hardoi, three in Hamirpur and one person each died in Mahoba, Banda, Jaunpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Prayagraj and Pratapgarh. Two people died in Kanpur, one in Farrukhabad and one in Fatehpur.
UP Relief Commissioner office informed that more than normal rainfall has been recorded in 63 districts of the state. During the last 24 hours, the entire state received 19 times more rainfall than normal.
Farrukhabad received 200 times more rainfall than normal, Kanpur Nagar 160 times more rainfall, Kannauj, Kanpur Dehat and Hardoi received 130 times more rainfall than normal. Normal rainfall was recorded in Bhadohi, Deoria and Aligarh, while the least rainfall was recorded in Ghazipur. Whereas there was no rainfall in Baghpat, Ghaziabad, Mathura, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, Shamli, Gautam Budh Nagar and Hapur.
In the last 48 hours, reports have been received that 117 houses have been damaged in the state due to heavy rainfall and storms.
The government has ordered an immediate survey and assessment of the damage caused by the heavy rains, and promptly provided relief assistance to the affected people as per the rules.
The services of the Fire Service, PAC, Civil Defense, Home Guards, and Disaster Mitras should be utilized as needed. Lekhpals and Village Development Officers have been instructed to immediately address waterlogging around kutcha houses.
Necessary protective measures have been directed to ensure proper drainage arrangements and the safety of families living in kutcha houses. Instructions have been given to relocate such families to safer locations if necessary.
