Raj civic polls: Ruling BJP wins mayoral/chairpersons posts in 198 of 302 civic bodies; Congress distant second with 94 wins

Jaipur, Sep 21 (UNI) The ruling BJP nominees have won the post of mayor/chairperson in 198 of the 302 civic bodies, including seven municipal corporations, the results of which have so far been announced by the Rajasthan state election commission here.
The opposition Congress suffered a setback in the mayoral and chairpersons' election today and could manage a distant second position winning 94 municipalities, including the lone success in the Bikaner Municipal Corporation.
A total of 309 civic bodies including ten municipal corporations, went to polls in two phases on September 9 and 11. The voting for election of mayors / chairpersons in 305 civic bodies which included five municipal corporations - Alwar, Ajmer, Bikaner, Udaipur and Pali were held on Monday.
The voting for mayor/chairperson in four municipalities, including the Jaipur, Jodhpur and Kota municipal corporations, was deferred until September 25, following an order of repolling in some 10 wards.
Besides Congress and BJP, AAP recorded win in one, CPI(M) in one, RLP-one and Independents in seven.
Results of voting for mayor/chairperson in three civic bodies were not yet announced.
In the elections held today, the nominees of the BJP were elected mayors in municipal corporations of Alwar, Ajmer, Udaipur and Pali. In the Bharatpur and Bhilwara Municipal Corporations, the BJP candidates have already been elected mayor unopposed.
The opposition Congress, however, has won the mayoral polls convincingly in the Bikaner Municipal Corporation with its nominee Anil Kalla declared elected defeating his BJP rival Surendra Singh by 20 votes.
Winner Kalla, the nephew of former Congress Minister B D Kalla, polled 50 votes -- eight votes more than the party's own strength of 42 members in the 80-member house.
While, the Congress nominee bagged additional seven votes of Independents and one of the lone Rashtriya Loktantric Party (RLP) corporator, the BJP candidate Singh also got additional votes of three Independents.
In today's voting, the Bikaner Municipal Corporation had a clean majority in favour of the Congress (42/80).
In Udaipur, the BJP secured 53, much more than the half way mark of 41.
In voting in the 80-member Udaipur civic body, BJP's Paras Singhvi bagged 55 votes, two votes more than's the party's own votes. The runners up Poonam Kanwar Rathore of Congress also secured additional vote of one Independent and one vote of CPI(M) corporator.
In Alwar, the home constituency of union Minister Bhupendra Yadav, though the ruling BJP fell short of majority -- 28/65, however the BJP nominee Suman Lata Agrawal, besides the party's own kitty, bagged additional votes of all the 14 Independents taking his final figures at 42, in the mayoral voting today.
The Congress nominee Kamlesh Sharma succeeded in securing the votes of all the 23 party corporators.
In Pali, the home district of BJP state president Madan Rathore, the ruling party was lagging by eight seats behind the rival Congress in the 65-member house. However, in Monday's mayoral polls the saffron party succeeded in attracting additional votes of 12 of the 15 Independents for the party winner Namita Bubakiya who won the polls by 33/65.
Loser Sumitra Jain (Congress) could get three votes of Independents.
In the home town of Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani, the BJP (32) suffered a setback in the ward members election, getting five seats less than the rival Congress (37) in the 80-member house. However, in the mayoral voting today BJP nominee Anamika Sharma (43) bagged additional votes of all 11 Independents while her Congress rival Kiran Gadwali got votes of the party corporators.
The ruling BJP has hailed the polls outcome as a landslide win that "endorses the pro development agenda of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and approval for the good governance by the Bhajan Lal Sharma led party government in the state".
However, complaints and allegations of unfair use of money power and the misuse of the police and government machinery in harrassing and influencing Independents at several places marred the poll process.
Leader of opposition in the Rajasthan state assembly Tika Ram Jully and Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra condemned what they termed as the "unfair role of money power approach of misusing government machinery to harass and pressurise the Independents for their votes". This is tantamount to the "murder of democracy", they retorted.
