Rajkumari wins India’s first Youth Olympic wushu medal

Dakar, Nov 4 (UNI) India’s Rajkumari Lanchenbi Chanu won a historic bronze medal in the women’s changquan combined wushu event at the Youth Olympic Games 2026 in Dakar,
Senegal.
Rajkumari scored 8.723 in gunshu before producing 9.316 in changquan for a combined total of 18.039 to finish third on Tuesday.
Egypt’s Sondos Sonbol won the gold medal with 18.660, scoring 9.330 in both gunshu and changquan.
Venezuela’s Valeria Frannerys Dudamel Alvarado took silver with 18.199, courtesy of a 9.246 in gunshu and 8.953 in changquan.
Rajkumari was fourth after the gunshu routine but climbed into the bronze-medal position following her changquan performance later in the day.
“I felt a little bit scared,” Rajkumari told Olympics.com about her performance. “My competitors were a little bit tough. That's why I felt a little scared.”
The bronze made Rajkumari India’s first wushu medallist at the Youth Olympic Games. Wushu is making its debut as a Youth Olympic medal sport at Dakar 2026.
Competitive wushu is broadly divided into two disciplines - taolu and sanda.
Taolu, in which Rajkumari competed, features judged performance routines. Sanda, meanwhile, is
a full-contact combat discipline involving punches, kicks and throws.
At Dakar 2026, the wushu medal programme features taolu events. In the women’s changquan combined event, athletes perform two routines - changquan and gunshu - with their scores added together to determine the final standings.
Changquan, meaning 'long fist', is a fast-paced bare-handed style characterised by long-range movements, leg techniques and acrobatic elements.
Gunshu is a weapon routine performed with a staff and features techniques including sweeping, chopping, striking and rotating movements.
Rajkumari qualified for the final after finishing second in the preliminary round with 17.982.
She scored 8.876 in the preliminary gunshu routine before adding 9.106 in changquan to finish behind Sonbol, who topped qualification with 18.386.
Before competing in Dakar, Rajkumari had won bronze in the girls’ youth changquan event at the World Junior Wushu Championships 2026 in Tianjin, the People’s Republic of China.
Rajkumari hails from Manipur, a state with a strong tradition in wushu. India’s only wushu medallist at the Asian Games 2026, Naorem Roshibina Devi, is also from Manipur.
Rajkumari’s medal was India’s third at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics, taking the country’s tally to one silver and two bronze medals.
On Monday, Khushbu Rajakbhai Darjada won silver in the women’s judo 63kg category, while Dhinidhi Desinghu became the first Indian swimmer to win a Youth Olympic medal after taking bronze in the women’s 100m freestyle.
