Rajnath Singh sets Rs 3 lakh crore defence production target, Rs 50,000 crore exports by 2029

New Delhi, Nov 3 (UNI) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said the government was committed to building a technologically empowered, future-ready military capable of addressing emerging security challenges, setting a target of achieving Rs 3 lakh crore in defence production and Rs 50,000 crore in defence exports by 2029.
Chairing a meeting of the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Defence on ‘Modernisation of Indian Defence Forces’ in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, Singh said modernisation was a continuous process that required sustained investment in technology, indigenous capabilities, research and development, and human resources.
“We aim to achieve defence production worth Rs 3 lakh crore and defence exports worth Rs 50,000 crore by 2029,” he said, highlighting the significant growth in India's domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem.
The Defence Minister said defence production had increased from Rs 46,429 crore in 2014-15 to a record Rs 1.78 lakh crore in 2025-26, while defence exports had grown from less than Rs 2,000 crore in 2014 to approximately Rs 40,000 crore.
Emphasising the government's financial commitment towards military modernisation, Singh pointed out that the defence budget for 2026-27 had been increased to a record Rs 7.85 lakh crore, including a capital outlay of Rs 2.19 lakh crore for modernisation and capital procurement.
He said adequate financial resources, coupled with effective utilisation and prioritisation of critical requirements of the three Services, were essential to strengthening India's military capabilities.
The meeting witnessed detailed discussions on emerging security challenges, changing warfare paradigms, technological advancements and the need to develop an operationally agile military capable of responding to conventional, sub-conventional and multi-domain threats.
Singh highlighted three key dimensions of military modernisation, budget and capital acquisition with self-reliance, technology and human capital, underlining the need to align defence preparedness with the changing character of warfare.
On technological advancement, he stressed the growing importance of artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, unmanned platforms, cyber and space capabilities, electronic warfare and advanced communication systems.
He also highlighted the contribution of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in developing advanced weapons, missiles and military systems, while pointing out that the government was providing a level playing field to private industry, ranging from MSMEs to large corporations.
Describing it as a 'whole-of-the-nation' approach, he expressed satisfaction over the increasing participation of the private sector in strengthening the country's defence capabilities.
Underscoring the importance of human capital, Singh said military strength was determined not merely by technology and financial resources but also by the capabilities and preparedness of personnel.
“The rapidly evolving nature of warfare necessitates that our Defence Forces remain aligned with the changing requirements of modern warfare. Keeping this in mind, all three Services have continuously refined their structures and formations,” he said.
Referring to the Indian Army's organisational changes, he cited the new formations, including ‘Asani’, ‘Bhairav’ and ‘Shaktiban’ platoons, saying they were proving effective in addressing contemporary operational requirements and adapting to changing battlefield dynamics.
The deliberations also focused on accelerating the induction of next-generation platforms and weapon systems, strengthening tri-service integration and joint operational planning, and enhancing collaboration between the Defence Forces, DRDO, defence public sector undertakings, private industry and academic institutions.
Singh emphasised that modernisation was not merely about procuring new weapons and equipment but also about improving operational preparedness, developing indigenous technologies and reducing strategic dependence on foreign sources.
