Raju Shetty announces 'highway jan' agitation from tomorrow in Maharashtra, Karnataka

Kolhapur, Oct 12 (UNI) After the high-level meeting of sugarcane farmers held in an air-conditioned hall in Delhi today evening with the union Minister ended 'completely fruitless', Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) national president and former MP Raju Shetty now declared a direct battle across the border from tomorrow (October 13) to block the national highways in both the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka and launch a 'Chakka Jam' agitation.
A press release issued by district SSS unit this evening said, this important meeting was held in New Delhi in the presence of union Minister Pralhad Joshi and union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan at the National Agricultural Science Centre, Pusa. Speaking on this occasion Chouhan claimed to have increased the fair and remunerative price (FRP) for sugarcane farmers every year.
After a three-hour meeting, Chouhan appointed a committee and decided to find a solution to the issue within the next month. With this negative stance of the government, the farmers' leaders angrily walked out of the meeting and announced this aggressive agitation from Delhi itself.
Shetty said that the government should consider about the rising costs of fertilizers, pesticides, medicines, labour, harvesting, transport and processing of sugar factories. Although the central government had increased the FRP, increasing the base of FRP had not benefited the farmers at all.
He said that if the central government does not take an immediate decision on these three demands, the national highway will be closed from tomorrow and even the sugar-carrying lorries leaving the factories will be stopped.
As per the annoucement, thousands of farmers will take to the streets at Kognoli toll plaza on the Kolhapur-Belgaum border, Karad, Satara and Indapur to block the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway indefinitely.
Farmers has demanded three things: a minimum support price for sugar of Rs 50 per kg, C-heavy ethanol price at Rs 70 per litre, and a subsidy of Rs 500 per tonne from the central government since the sugar crushing season is starting early. UNI SSS SS
