Real development meaningful only when it reaches last person in society: Bhagwat

Yavatmal, Sep 29 (UNI) Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Tuesday said that real development can be considered meaningful only when its benefits reach the last person in society, stressing that the welfare of the most deprived should remain central to the nation's progress.
Addressing a function organised by Deendayal Seva Pratishthan on the birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya here, Bhagwat said the concept of "Antyodaya" envisioned by Upadhyaya focused on ensuring prosperity and dignity for the last person in the social hierarchy.
He said economic growth alone cannot be the sole measure of development and that it is necessary to assess whether the benefits of progress are reaching those at the grassroots level.
Referring to the widening gap between the privileged and the underprivileged, Bhagwat said efforts should be directed towards reducing inequalities and ensuring inclusive development.
The RSS chief also underlined the importance of sustainable agriculture, saying farming should not be viewed merely as a business activity but as a means of serving society.
He advocated organic and mixed farming practices and emphasised the role of livestock-based agriculture in strengthening rural economies.
Praising the work of Deendayal Seva Pratishthan, Bhagwat said the organisation had been working for the upliftment of marginalised communities, rehabilitation of families affected by farmer suicides and promotion of low-cost natural farming practices.
He said the true tribute to Upadhyaya would be to translate his philosophy into action through service and community participation aimed at improving the lives of the most deprived sections of society.
