Rescue operations accelerated at SLBC tunnel accident site to locate 6 trapped workers

Hyderabad, Apr 13 (UNI) Rescue operations at the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel accident site in Telangana are being carried out at an accelerated pace, with coordinated efforts by multiple agencies to locate the six workers trapped inside the tunnel.
The SLBC tunnel accident, which occurred on February 22, trapped eight workers. So far, the bodies of two victims have been recovered and handed over to their families. Authorities are making special efforts to expedite operations and locate the remaining six workers.
SLBC Tunnel Special Officer Shivshankar Loteti, speaking after a high-level review meeting held on Sunday at the SLBC Tunnel Inlet 1 office in Domalapenta village, stated that large boulders near the accident site are being carefully dismantled using excavators and removed by loco trains to facilitate smoother access.
The review meeting, which included senior officials from rescue teams such as Singareni Mines Rescue, SDRF, Jaypee Company, and others, focused on the ongoing operations and strategies to expedite relief efforts. Shivshankar Loteti emphasized that rescue teams are working round the clock, undertaking multiple critical tasks such as conveyor belt repairs, ventilation extension, soil excavation, TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) part cutting, steel removal, and pumping out spring water.
The Special Officer reassured that meticulous attention is being paid to technical details, with soil excavation and other internal tunnel operations progressing without interruption. “The pace of operations is expected to increase as we near completion of the access route to the accident site,” Loteti noted, adding that rescue efforts are being conducted in a comprehensive and well-planned manner.
Expert input from the Geological Survey of India, seasoned engineers from the Irrigation Department, and tunnel construction specialists is being actively incorporated into the strategy. Regular monitoring of weather conditions, soil stability, and water flow within the tunnel guides the decision-making process to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the relief measures.
Also present at the review meeting were Singareni Mines Rescue General Manager Baidya, SDRF Officer Giridhar Reddy, Jaypee Company Senior Project Engineer Sanjay Kumar Singh, and officials from Hydra, underscoring the multi-agency collaboration driving the rescue mission forward, an official release said.
