Russia says its preparing to deliver critical aid to Alyoshki, urges Ukraine not to hinder operations

Alyoshki, Oct 26 (UNI) Russia is preparing to deliver humanitarian aid and facilitate the evacuation of civilians in the city of Alyoshki in the Kherson region under a temporary ceasefire, Russian Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova has said, urging Kyiv not to obstruct the operation.
"The Russian side is doing and will continue to do everything possible to ensure that people are granted the freedom of choice that best takes their safety into account," Lantratova wrote on the messaging platform Max. "We hope that the Ukrainian side will not take any steps that would hinder this, as has happened on more than one occasion."
She said the immediate priorities were to assess residents' needs, organise a humanitarian convoy and deliver medicines, food, hygiene and sanitation products, and other daily necessities. The operation would also seek to evacuate those wishing to leave the city.
According to Lantratova, local authorities believe relatively few residents remain willing to evacuate, as most people who wanted to leave have already done so voluntarily. She said those still in the city would be given the same opportunity.
Lantratova also claimed Russian troops were delivering aid and clearing mines from roads following Ukrainian drone attacks, while Russian doctors had been killed or injured in strikes on ambulances. These claims were not independently verified.
The Ukrainian city, occupied by Moscow since the war, has been facing a major humanitarian crisis, having been completely cut off from commercial supply lines since May 2026, with the remaining 1,700 to 2,000 residents, many of them elderly or unable to move without assistance, alongside several dozen children, surviving without electricity, gas or running water.
Further exacerbating the issue, the city also faces complex logistical problems due to being an active, heavily mined front-line war zone, making access very challenging. Specialist engineering teams will need to clear access roads to allow humanitarian convoys to enter safely.
The White House announced on October 23 that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to a temporary, localised halt to fighting in Alyoshki. The arrangement was brokered with the involvement of US First Lady Melania Trump, according to the announcement.
The ceasefire, described as a "silence regime", is scheduled to take effect at 3am Kyiv time on Tuesday, October 27, with the humanitarian mission expected to begin on October 29. The pause is intended to allow emergency deliveries, including food, fuel and medicine, and the evacuation of civilians. Defence officials from both sides have been coordinating logistics.
Moscow has accused Ukraine of carrying out more than 120 drone and artillery strikes on Alyoshki in the preceding week, alleging that the attacks threatened the truce.
Kyiv, meanwhile, has accused Russian forces of obstructing previous aid efforts and preventing civilians from leaving. Ukraine has also cited a delivery of four tonnes of food dropped by Ukrainian drones in late September.
